Authorities have concluded their investigation into the mysterious deaths of legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Aaraka.

On Feb. 26, authorities were called to investigate after a security official saw the bodies of Hackman and Arakawa through a window at their home in Sante Fe, New Mexico. Hackman’s body was found on a floor near the kitchen, and Arakawa’s was found in a bathroom with scattered pills and a prescription bottle on the countertop.

Officials determined that they had been dead for several days. One of their three German Shepherds was also found dead, and the other two were alive and roaming around the property.

Per Morgan Lee of the Associated Press, authorities announced on Friday that Arakawa died of Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Hackman passed away one week later with heart disease and displayed signs of Alzheimer’s

Dr. Heather Jarrell, the Chief Medical Examiner, said that the 95-year-old actor was in “very poor” health before he passed away:

“Mr. Hackman showed evidence of advanced Alzheimer’s disease. He was in a very poor state of health. He had significant heart disease, and I think ultimately that’s what resulted in his death.”

According to Mayo Clinic, Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome “is a rare infectious disease that begins with flu-like symptoms and progresses rapidly to more severe disease.” The disease is usually caused by exposure to rodent droppings or saliva, with the deer mouse said to be the most common source in North America.
