NBA – The Collapse Continues for the Spurs Without Wembanyama, Final Decision Imminent?
Once again heavily defeated on Wednesday night, the Spurs continue to sink in the Western Conference.
Their record keeps worsening, and for the fans, it’s time to make a decision. A resolution is expected in the coming days or weeks.
Spurs’ Playoff Hopes Are Fading
As March approaches and with their new record of 24-34, the Spurs are further away than ever from securing the final play-in spot.
With the Suns, who are also outside the playoff picture, still ahead of them, it would take a miracle for San Antonio to turn things around and surpass the Kings.
The harsh reality is that their postseason race is likely over.
Is this a surprise? Not really, especially considering Victor Wembanyama’s absence.
There are simply too many gaps in this roster to realistically aim for anything significant, with the added challenge of a head coach facing increasing criticism in San Antonio.
Wednesday night’s game did nothing to reassure fans, as the Spurs suffered a 106-118 loss to the Rockets in a local derby.
Time to Shut It Down for the Spurs?
But don’t be fooled by the final score—Houston dominated San Antonio for nearly the entire game.
Mitch Johnson’s squad managed to make the result look somewhat respectable with a meaningless 31-17 fourth quarter, but by then, the game was long lost.
It almost seemed like the players had given up.
Stephon Castle’s 22 points off the bench weren’t enough, but the young guard continues to prove that he needs more playing time—especially after being unfairly benched by his coach in the previous game.
Unfortunately, things are only going to get tougher for San Antonio, particularly with Jeremy Sochan’s injury, which could keep him sidelined for some time.
@mikecwright: “Jeremy Sochan took a hit to the head and, as a precaution, has been ruled out for the rest of the game.”
To make matters worse, De’Aaron Fox is set to undergo finger surgery in order to return to full strength.
Initially, he was expected to wait until the summer for the procedure, but with the Spurs’ current struggles, he may opt to have the surgery sooner.
At this point, tanking for the 2025 draft should become the team’s priority—the only question is when the front office will fully embrace this strategy.
@Saheem23_: “With Cooper Flagg in the draft, the stakes are high. The Spurs should shut it all down.”
Between injuries and poor performances, San Antonio’s season has officially taken a turn—just not in the direction fans were hoping for.
Now, it’s up to the organization to take advantage of the situation and focus on the 2025 draft as their best chance to rebuild for the future.
