MAGA fans are cheering White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt’s first press briefing Tuesday afternoon. Leavitt, at age 27-years-old, made history as the country’s youngest press secretary. But despite her youth, she almost immediately put the press in its place – in that she offered up two briefing room seats, usually reserved for her own staff, for ‘new media’ to use. The ‘new media’ invited Tuesday included Axios’ Mike Allen – the original author of Politico’s Playbook and an old Washington hat – and Breitbart’s Matthew Boyle.
Breitbart, of course, was previously run by Trump political strategist Steve Bannon . Leavitt quickly won the approval of some of Trump’s most ardent online supporters by scolding reporters to their faces. She even used one of Trump’s nicknames for former President Joe Biden. Here are the five moments that stuck out at Leavitt’s first briefing to DailyMail.com:
Leavitt puts ‘new media’ reporters in front row seats
At the top of the briefing, Leavitt shook up tradition by announcing that two ‘new media’ reporters would get to sit in seats at the front of the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room that usually belong to White House staff. She announced that two seats usually reserved for White House staff would become ‘new media’ seats – and those individuals would get to ask the first questions. ‘Starting today this seat in the front of the room, which is usually occupied by the press secretary’s staff, will be called the “new media” seat,’ she said. ‘My team will review the applications and give credentials to new media applicants who meet our criteria and pass United States Secret Service requirements to enter the White House complex.’ Traditionally the wire service, the Associated Press, gets the first question – while the White House Correspondents’ Association dictates seating assignments in the briefing room via a committee.
But by giving up seats generally reserved for staff the Trump 2.0 White House was able to get around that. Leavitt even showed off a chart that showed how fewer and fewer Americans are getting their news from traditional outlets. ‘We welcome independent journalists, podcasters, social media influencers and content creators to apply for credentials to cover this White House,’ she said. ‘We also, again, encourage anybody in this country, whether you are a TikTok content creator, a blogger, a podcaster – if you are producing legitimate news content, no matter the medium, you will be allowed to apply for press credentials to this White Hosue,’ she added.
Says she won’t lie – but the press shouldn’t either
Leavitt was asked the same question by the Associated Press, on Tuesday by reporter Zeke Miler, as previous press secretaries – will she be honest with the American people. Her clapback pointed fingers at both the press and the previous occupants of the podium. ‘I commit to telling the truth from this podium every single day. I commit to speaking on behalf of the President of the United States. That is my job,’ she answered. ‘And I will say it’s very easy to speak truth from this podium when you have a president who has implemented policies that are wildly popular with the American people – and that is exactly what this administration is doing.’
‘It’s correcting the lies and the wrongs of the past four years,’ she continued. ‘Many of the lies that have been told to your faces in this very briefing room.’ ‘I will not do that,’ she promised. ‘But since you brought up truth-speak, I would like to point out, that while I vow to provide the truth from this podium, we ask that all of you in this room hold yourselves to that same standard.’ ‘We know for a fact that there have been lies that have been pushed by many legacy media outlets in the country about this president, about his family and we will not accept that,’ she stated. ‘We will call you out when we feel your reporting is wrong or there is misinformation about this White House.’
Leavitt makes clear that every undocumented immigrant is a ‘criminal’
In a back-and-forth with ABC News’ Mary Bruce, Leavitt said every immigrant in the country illegally was considered a criminal. ‘All of them,’ she said. ‘Because they illegally broke our nation’s laws and therefore they are criminals, as far as this administration goes. I know the last administration didn’t see it that way so it’s a big culture shift in our nation to view someone who breaks our immigration laws as a criminal but that’s exactly what they are.’ ‘If they broke our nation’s laws, yes, they are criminals,’ she reiterated when pressed. Leavitt also opened up the briefing by showing photos of illegal immigrants who had been caught since last week – and what crimes they had previously committed.
Leavitt shrugs off assassination threats to former Trump-aligned officials
Fox News Channel’s Jacqui Heinrich asked Leavitt if the president would reconsider stripping people like former National Security Advisor John Bolton and ex-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of their security details – and the answer appeared to remain a no. ‘Sen. Tom Cotton said that he’s seen the intelligence and the threat from Iran is real for anyone who played a role in the Soleimani strike,’ Heinrich pointed out. She pointed out that ‘family, innocent, bystanders, anyone near them when they’re out in public’ could be put in danger in an assassination attempt. Leavitt pointed out that Trump had already been asked this. ‘The president was asked and answered this yesterday. And he was firm in his decision despite some of the comments that you had referenced, and he’s made it very clear that he does not believe American taxpayers should fund security details for individuals who have served in the government for the rest of their lives,’ she said. ‘And there’s nothing stopping these individuals that you mentioned from obtaining private security,’ she added.
Leavitt also didn’t buy that Trump dropping security details – and security clearances – from former Trump administration officials would cool off any recruiting. ‘No, in fact, I’ve talked to the Presidential Personnel Office who have told me directly that there is such an influx of resumes for this administration that it’s incredibly overwhelming. There is no lack of talent for the Trump administration,’ she boasted. When Heinrich pressed the press secretary on whether Trump would accept any responsibility if something happened, Leavitt answered brusquely and moved on. ‘The president was asked and answered this yesterday,’ she answered. Leavitt then made a point to call on The Daily Caller’s Reagan Reese, who was seated in the back row of the briefing room – an area that got little attention from press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
Leavitt says ‘Sleepy’ Joe responsible for chicken murder, higher egg prices
The Washington Examiner’s Christian Datoc pointed out that ‘egg prices have skyrocketed’ and asked what the administration is specifically doing to lower costs. ‘I would like to point out to each and every one of you that in 2024, when Joe Biden was in the Oval Office – or upstairs in the residence sleeping – I’m not really sure, egg prices increased 65 percent in this country,’ she replied, getting in an anti-Biden zinger. She blamed the higher costs on the ‘inflationary policies of the last administration.’ ‘As far as the egg shortage, what’s also contributing to that is that the Biden administration and the Department of Agriculture directed the mass killing of more than 100 million chickens – which has led to a lack of chicken supply in this country, therefore a lack of egg supply, which is leading to this shortage.’ She urged the Senate to push through Trump’s nominees, including Brooke Rollins to lead the Department of Agriculture, to better assist this issue.
