The other day, a Pennsylvania resident noticed a curious cardboard box sitting outside their house with a message scrawled on the side.

“The caller reported there was a box in front of their home labeled ‘free puppy,’” East Coast Bulldog Rescue director Sara Hornbeck told The Dodo.

Peeking inside, the resident locked eyes with the 8-week-old white dog huddled within.

Animal control officers arrived and took the pup back to their kennel, where she stayed briefly before heading to East Coast Bulldog Rescue for further care. Meeting the friendly, relatively healthy dog, rescuers almost couldn’t believe her circumstances.

“Once we picked her up from the animal control kennel, we quickly discovered she was the sweetest, most lovable girl and was surprisingly in good shape for a puppy that had been discarded like trash,” Hornbeck said.

Staff members named the puppy Roxy and posted about her online, where her story made a splash.

“She very quickly stole the hearts of our social media followers,” Hornbeck said.

Among the legion of followers, Roxy’s story reached exactly the right eyes.

“A family member of a previous adopter specifically fell in love with Roxy,” Hornbeck said. “Their family had just recently and suddenly lost their best canine companion and knew Roxy was the dog they needed to honor their girl, Junie Bug, and heal their hearts.”

Safe with her new family, Roxy can expect a life of devotion, friendship and love.
