Dog Abandoned In Drainage Canal Begs Passersby To Stop And Help

It was a scorching summer day last June when Blue Cross of India (BCI) rescuers received a heart-stopping call. Someone had spotted a helpless animal trapped in a drainage canal off the Cooum River with no way of getting out on her own.

As temperatures continued to rise, the BCI crew knew time was limited to save her.

The BCI team rushed to the drainage canal, accessible only from a busy highway overpass, and soon found an adult Boxer, whom they named Boxy, fending for herself tens of feet below.

“Boxy was callously dumped on the road, left to fate,” BCI wrote on Instagram. “But our team refused to let her story end there.”

Attempting to reach Boxy from above would be challenging, as the panicked pup kept wading back toward the river, moving farther away from the rescuers. When she finally returned to where the rescuers were stationed, they had to figure out how to scoop her up without falling into the canal themselves.

Once she was near, the team praised Boxy continuously as they lowered a makeshift rope leash by her side. After some coaxing, they secured the rope around Boxy’s neck and gently led her to a grassy area that was easier to reach.

Moments later, a dedicated rescuer repelled down to the grass and carefully lifted Boxy to the surface, where his other team members were waiting for her.

The sweet girl could not have been more thankful to have been saved.

“We cleaned her with a towel and brought [her] to our sanctuary,” BCI wrote. “Her tail wags with joy, [and] her eyes shine with gratitude.”

Boxy enjoyed her time at BCI’s sanctuary, where she could decompress from the trauma of being abandoned in a body of water. But as much as she loved making friends and playing with her fellow residents, Boxy dreamed of finding a permanent family. Then one day, shortly after her rescue, Boxy’s dreams came true.

“She’s found her forever home!” BCI wrote.

It’s been almost a year since her rescue, and Boxy is thriving with her permanent family. Even though her time in the canal was beyond stressful, her memories of the past continue to fade with each passing day in her new home, and she is finally happy.

“[It’s] a second chance at life [and] a first chance at love,” BCI wrote.
