Modern dating is not like it was even 20 years ago. These days, with the abundance of dating apps and the possibility of endless swiping, the illusion of options is a trap that a lot of people fall into, which results in fumbling a lot of genuine people and missing out on great opportunities.

The way Whoopi Goldberg sees it, she had some interesting advice that certainly reflects the dating scene that she came up in. Whoopi recently said: “You have to be able to reach out and talk to people. I think a lot of this has to do with people not connecting.”

Goldberg continued, adding: “People don’t connect. We always get questions here and I say, go to a bar. Smell the people. And if they haven’t showered, get the hell out!” Before going to break, Whoopi left her listeners with one last piece of advice, concluding with: “Make mistakes!”

In the modern dating game today, there is so much swiping and ghosting that goes on, that people rarely even make it to an in-person date. Then, there are all of the people who use things like dating as a way to make content for platforms like TikTok and more.

There are a lot more barriers that exist today, whereas, for someone like Whoopi Goldberg, going to the bar was the norm. Striking up a conversation out in the wild is less common than it used to be, and in Whoopi’s case, using your other senses like judging how someone smells while they are out in public, is something that can certainly give you a lot of valuable information regarding what type of romantic partner they could potentially be.

While what Whoopi said recently was tongue-in-cheek, there is certainly some merit to it, essentially telling her listeners to quit swiping on their phones and to actually engage with the real world and the people in it, smells and all.
