Basketball was back in Los Angeles last night amid the South California wildfires. Until the tip-off, the mood around the court was somber. It was a melancholic vibe starting from JJ Redick’s emotional pre-game presser and the Lakers franchise’s small tribute to the first responders.
And it continued even after the game. A dejected Anthony Davis opened up about his family’s scary situation during Day 1 of the wildfires, and he also made a special request.
When the situation in LA became serious, the Lakers were in Texas, taking on the Mavericks. That’s when JJ Redick broke the news that his family home was destroyed in the fire.
Luckily, the officials evacuated the family on time. But days later, AD has now revealed how his family encountered the scary once-in-a-lifetime-esque moment.
Speaking to the reporters after the game, Anthony Davis said, “We were in Dallas, and when everything just kinda started happening and obviously the kids, wife and started freaking out. You get home and see everything is fine.”
Moreover, speaking of the aftermath of the wildfire, as it continues to spread across SoCal, the big man stated how his daughter and son’s classmates’ houses were burned down completely. Adding to his grief, Davis also stated an impending danger.
“As the days went on, more and more things happening, more and more fires happening to the point now where it’s getting close to you. Now you have to evacuate,” said Anthony Davis.
At the same time, the superstar addressed the tireless efforts of firefighters and first responders and made a plea to the NBA. The LA big man added, “Actually, I was just talking that getting the… 3-4 couple games bring the first responders, firefighters, whoever, bring them to the game, meeting them, whatever the case may be.”
Moreover, it wasn’t just Anthony Davis who wanted to honor the LAFD heroes. LeBron James also showcased a grand gesture to respect the tireless efforts of the firefighters and first responders.
LeBron James took his message of solidarity to the global stage. The Lakers star was one of the first athletes to publicly acknowledge the situation and send promising messages to the public via social media and interviews.
While the city hasn’t entirely recovered from the national disaster, the Lakers have managed to bring joy to the locals, at least for a brief time, as they resumed action after 6 days.
Taking on the SA Spurs at Crypto.com Arena, King James made sure LA’s superheroes are acknowledged.
He donned the bright red and yellow colorway LeBron 22s tonight. Bron also used his sharpie to write LAFD as a mark of respect for their efforts to save the city.
Moreover, ahead of the same game, JJ Redick had revealed the significance of basketball returning to LA, saying, “It’s our job to give strength, give hope, and give joy. Sports are a lot of things.
Sports can certainly provide an escape, a distraction — and hopefully, sports and tonight can provide some joy,” Even though the Purple and Gold side lost the game against the Spurs, the hooping action indeed brought hope for many of the disheartened people of LA.
