A little case of mistaken identity took an awkward turn for Luke Bryan recently.
The singer recalled the incident, in which a gas station cashier not only thought he was fellow country crooner Blake Shelton, but then inadvertently shamed him because he wasn’t, during an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show Friday.
The memory came about when Hudson brought up their mutual friend and her “buddy,” Shelton. “I could recommend you not be his buddy, I can steer you into another direction,” Bryan joked of Shelton, adding, “nah, I’m playing.”
Hudson then asked if it’s true that people often confuse the two of them, and Bryan said that it’s “very true.” To illustrate the resemblance, a side-by-side photo of Shelton and Bryan popped on screen, which prompted Bryan to joke, “I’m a little mad about how Blake’s eyes look so pretty right there.”
Getting serious again, he then recalled how he recently went on a fishing trip with his 14-year-old son, Tate, and stopped to get snacks at a gas station. He went to check out, and the guy behind the counter then asked if he was Shelton. “He says, ‘I know it, you’re Blake, are you Blake?'” Bryan explained. “And I said, ‘I’m not Blake, but what makes you think that?’ And he goes, ‘Well, you’re just Blake Shelton’s doppelgänger.'”
Bryan said, at this point, several people had gathered in line behind him, but the cashier couldn’t help himself and added one more observation. “He goes, ‘There’s no way you’re Blake, because Blake wouldn’t be here shopping at this gas station.’ And I get my stuff, and he looks at me and goes, ‘Could you imagine having Blake Shelton’s money?'” Bryan said.
To Hudson, the American Idol judge then joked, “I didn’t really want to get into it, that I had more than Blake.”

Apparently the mistake is on Bryan’s mind a lot lately — earlier in the week, he also talked about the gas station encounter during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live,
telling Kimmel, “My gas station that I live nearby… one of the attendants that works the cash register [mistook] me for Blake Shelton. That has been my worst thing in the neighborhood.”
“He was so convinced. He’s like, ‘You’re Blake Shelton. Tell me about being Blake Shelton.’ He goes, ‘Do you get that a lot?’ I said, ‘Not much,'” he recalled.
Elsewhere on the Jennifer Hudson Show, Bryan told Hudson some hilarious stories about goats and chickens, and also revealed why the show’s Spirit Tunnel tradition might replace his morning coffee. Watch more with Bryan in the video clip above.
