Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese hit back at those who had criticized her before the WNBA star appeared on the new front cover of Vogue
WNBA star Angel Reese issued a clear statement to her critics after delving into the fashion world.
The 22-year-old enjoyed an impressive rookie season with the Chicago Sky, despite missing out on the playoffs. Reese was named a WNBA All-Star after setting the single-season league record for rebounds.
A former NCAA champion from her time at LSU, Reese played a key part in the WNBA’s boom last year. Nicknamed the ‘Chi-Barbie,’ her growing popularity resulted in her starring on the cover of Vogue, and the forward responded to the recent backlash she had faced on social media.
Reese shared various posts about Vogue’s new Winter 2025 issue, which showed her wearing a glamorous red Versace dress. “I ‘covered up’ and gave y’all COVERGIRL,” Reese said on Instagram and X, hitting back at those who had reacted negatively to photos she had posted on New Year’s Eve.
Before the turn of the year, the Chicago forward had shared photos in a cut-out dress across social media, but later scrubbed the posts from her Instagram page. However, Reese’s interest in fashion is nothing new, as she explained to Vogue.
“It’s always been both: basketball and fashion,” Reese said. “I was always in my mom’s closet, putting on her stuff. I liked to carry a purse. Hair done. I wanted to look put together. I still do.”

It is not the first time that Reese has stood her ground. Given she earned $73,439 from her rookie salary in Chicago, the 22-year-old often had to field questions about how she afforded her lifestyle.
However, these discussions failed to account for her many sponsorship deals. In October, when it was announced in October that the Sky star had signed a multi-year deal with Reebok, Reese couldn’t resist reacting to her online critics and joked: “Looks like I can ‘afford’ my bills now.”
