Deep vein thrombosis is a form of a blood clot, and the treatment and recovery will hold Victor Wembanyama, 21, out of action for the rest of the season.
“The San Antonio Spurs today announced that Victor Wembanyama has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder,” the team said in a statement.
“The condition was discovered when Wembanyama returned to San Antonio following the All-Star Game in San Francisco.
“Wembanyama is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024-25 regular season.
“The team will provide updates as appropriate.”
According to ESPN reporter Shams Charania, the Spurs believe this is an isolated condition.
Losing Wembanyama all but kills the Spurs’ chances of making a run into the playoffs this season.
Sitting at 23-29, San Antonio currently owns the No. 12 seed in the Western Conference and would need to jump to the No. 10 seed to even make the Play-In Tournament.
They are currently five games behind the Golden State Warriors who own the No. 10 seed with a 28-27 record.
Wembanyama was having a spectacular season in 2024-25, tallying 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game.
He led the NBA with 3.8 blocks per game.
The Spurs center was one of the favorites to win Defensive Player of the year this season.
Wembanyama just finished playing in his first All-Star game over the weekend, but that will be his last basketball action for the foreseeable future.
NBA fans were horrified to hear of Wembanyama’s injury and shared their thoughts on social media.
“Prayers up man. Blood clots are nothing to mess with get healthy soon,” one fan said.
“Blood clots are no joke. I hope he recovers fully,” another fan said.
“Damn that’s scary. Hope he’s alright,” a third fan said.
“Prayers for Wemby,” a fourth fan said.
“I’m glad they were able to find it. Get well Wemby!” a fifth fan said.
Wembanyama should be clear to return for the start of the 2025-26 NBA season if his recovery goes accordingly.
